Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to set up transboundary water management commission

The Kazakh Majilis ratified an agreement between the Governments of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on joint management and rational use of transboundary water facilities, Qazinform News Agency reports.

The agreement was signed on November 15 as part of the state visit of the Head of State to Uzbekistan.

The goal of the agreement is joint management and rational use of transboundary facilities, and safe use of interstate waterworks. Besides, it provides for the creation of an Intergovernmental Kazakhstan–Uzbekistan Commission on water management.

The parties are set to conduct water accounting at border hydroposts and coordinated distribution of resources, develop a joint automated system for monitoring water intake with real-time data sharing, implement water-saving measures, update shared water facilities and monitor water use and take measures to prevent depletion of water resources.

Joint actions are also planned to prevent and respond to natural and man-made emergencies.
