Int'l workshop on actions to reduce earthquake losses to be held in Kazakhstan

The seventh session of the International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disasters (IPRED) will follow the workshop on 28 - 30 May 2014 at the same venue.

Current increasing frequency, scope, complexity, and destructive capacity of natural hazards require integrated and internationally concerted measures of the international community. The importance of earthquake risk reduction has become a factor that united efforts both UNESCO and various experts from twelve countries, including Kazakhstan.

The UNESCO - IPRED programme was established in July 2008 in order to identify gaps and priorities through the sharing of scientific knowledge and experience in the field of seismology and earthquake engineering. This meeting gives a new opportunity for the one hundred international experts to work in close partnership with colleagues from Kazakhstan in order to discuss the use of the existing know-how on earthquakes and its integration into development programs. The title of the Workshop indicates clearly that it's time to focus on the next decade actions for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development goals, the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office said.
