Denmark’s playful petition to buy California gains 200,000 signatures
A humorous online petition proposing that Denmark should raise a trillion dollars to buy California has gained over 200,000 signatures, reports a Kazinform News Agency correspondent.

The petition jokes, “Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.’ Well, we have an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality.” It suggests buying California from Donald Trump, claiming, “Yes, you heard that right. We just need your help to make it happen.”
The idea surfaced after the U.S. President showed interest in purchasing Greenland, which belongs to Denmark. The petition playfully responds, “Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet? Yes, please.”
To make the deal happen, supporters need to raise the massive sum and send Denmark’s best negotiators—Lego executives and the cast of a popular Danish TV show.
If successful, California would be renamed “New Denmark.” Los Angeles would become “Løs Ångeles” and Danish culture would take over—cozy “hygge” in Hollywood, bike lanes in Beverly Hills, and traditional Danish food on every corner. The petition also teases that Denmark’s values, like universal healthcare and fact-based politics, could apply.
The petition lists reasons why Denmark should want California, including better weather, a steady avocado supply, and a stronger tech industry. It even jokes about welcoming “tech bros” into Danish democracy and renaming Disneyland “Hans Christian Andersenland.”
The U.S. President has described control over Greenland as essential, but both Greenland and Denmark have firmly rejected the idea. Meanwhile, Greenland’s prime minister has spoken about the island’s desire to move away from colonial rule, though without directly mentioning the U.S.
Earlier, it was reported that Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives had introduced a bill titled the “Make Greenland Great Again Act”, which seeks authorization to negotiate the purchase of Greenland from Denmark. The bill, led by Republican Representatives Andy Ogles and Diana Harshbarger, proposes that the United States initiate formal discussions with Denmark regarding Greenland's acquisition once President Trump takes office on January 20, 2025.
