Central Asian Regional hub to be created under Kazakh National University

ASTANA. December 9. KAZINFORM — In the framework of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University scientists participation in the Kazakh-French scientific symposium which took place from December 2 to 7 in the city of Nancy (France), the University Rector Academician G. Mutanov has held a meeting with the UNESCO Deputy Director General for Education Qian Tang and the head of the UNESCO Educational Department on Sustainable Development Alexander Leicht, the press service of the University informs.

In Paris, at the headquarters of UNESCO the rector of the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi Galim Mutanov discussed the issues of cooperation with the UNESCO Deputy Secretary General for Education Qian Tang. As a result of the meeting it was decided to establish a regional hub for sustainable development. The hub will be formed by a network of universities of Central Asia on the basis of the KNU in accordance with the program UNITWIN proposed by UNESCO. The main tasks of the hub will be creation of a structure to seek solutions to key issues of sustainable development in the region as well as training of highly qualified specialists in the field.

Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi is the only university in Central Asia participating in the UN ''Academic Impact'' project and it is a partner of the international educational project on Sustainable Development named ''GLOBAL CLASSROOM''.

The implementation of the UNESCO project is strategically important task. The concept of sustainable development refers to the key areas of UNESCO and is widely supported by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. The hub will be a logical continuation of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University concept "Green Bridge across generations" presented at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development "Rio +20".
