The Almaty Zoo has gained new residents — a pair of Canadian lynx, Qazinform News Agency reports.

The animals arrived on April 6 from the United States as part of an international animal exchange program. In exchange, the zoo transferred some of its birds of prey.

After arrival, the lynx underwent mandatory quarantine and veterinary observation. The animals have now successfully adapted to their new environment and are available for visitors to see.

The male Canadian lynx is 3 years old, and the female is 7. The new residents are housed in the so-called "leopard circle" — a complex of enclosures for small predators. Comfortable conditions have been created for the animals, including a spacious enclosure with shelter, air conditioning, and a misting system. Their diet includes fish, beef, and chicken.

The Canadian lynx is one of the most interesting members of the cat family, inhabiting the northern regions of North America. The predator is highly resilient and perfectly suited to harsh climates. Distinctive features include long ear tufts, thick fur, and wide paws that allow easy movement through deep snow.

Interestingly, when walking, the lynx places its hind paws exactly in the tracks of its front paws, making its movement nearly silent. The ear tufts help it perceive surrounding sounds more effectively, which is especially crucial during hunting.

Almaty Zoo staff hope the new pair will settle in well and eventually produce offspring, which would be a valuable contribution to the conservation and breeding of this remarkable species.

Visitors can now see the Canadian lynx at the zoo and get to know these new representatives of North American fauna.

Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that the Kazakh President named newborn Akhal-Teke foals.
