According to a statement released by the Valais Cantonal Police, on July 26, 2026, a hiker reported finding two bodies on the glacier.

Local authorities organized a recovery operation, transporting the remains to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Valais Hospital in Sion.

"DNA testing confirmed the victims were two Belgian mountaineers who disappeared in the Weissmies region in 1992. The men were aged 39 and 41 at the time of their disappearance," the statement reads.

The Cantonal Police keep a register of missing persons dating back to 1925, largely involving individuals lost in high‑mountain areas or in rivers and lakes.

Officials note that as glaciers melt, it is not uncommon for remains of climbers lost decades earlier to resurface.

Earlier, it was reported that the bodies of five climbers missing since November were found dead on Nepal’s Yalung Ri.
