The tool activates when a user opens a distracting app, triggering a 10-second pause that prompts them to reflect on why they opened the app.

During the break, users can complete a short breathing exercise, set a timer to limit screen time, view favorite photos, or switch to alternative activities such as listening to an audiobook.

The feature is designed as a middle ground between traditional app timers, which can be easily ignored, and full app lockouts, which may be too restrictive for some users.

Pause Point also includes an additional safeguard for users who want stronger limits on app use. To disable the feature, users must restart their phone, adding an extra step intended to discourage impulsive deactivation.

Developers say the goal is to help people reclaim time spent on automatic scrolling habits and focus more on activities they value.

The issue of addictive app design has also drawn attention from regulators in Europe. Earlier, the European Commission said TikTok may have breached the EU’s Digital Services Act over features such as infinite scroll, autoplay and push notifications, which regulators say could encourage compulsive use, particularly among minors.

Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported on an AI bot designed to replace “doomscrolling”, eliminating the need for users to constantly scroll through social media feeds.
