President signs Water Code of Kazakhstan

The Head of State has signed the Water Code of Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency learned from the Akorda press service.

Earlier, the Majilis deputies agreed with the Senate's proposed wording of separate articles of the Water Code.

The first block of novelties is aimed at introducing new mechanisms of water conservation and protection of water bodies. For the first time, the concept of ‘water security’ is introduced into the legislation. It covers the protection of citizens and economy from water scarcity and pollution of water bodies, as well as protection of Kazakhstan's interests in the field of protection and use of transboundary water bodies.

The second block revises approaches to water resources management with a focus on the priority of their protection, broad public involvement in decision-making and the importance of water basin-based management.

The third block of novelties includes activities to prevent and eliminate harmful impact of water, including flood control measures.

The fourth block of novelties toughens state regulation and control in the field of water fund use and protection.

The fifth block is aimed at ensuring safety of hydraulic structures.

Earlier, the President signed  the plan for the implementation of the initiatives announced at the IV session of the Ulttyq Qurultay (National Congress).
