This is the first visit at the head-of-state level in the history of relations between the two countries. The sides discussed interparliamentary cooperation and prospects for expanding bilateral relations.

Welcoming the distinguished guest, the Majilis chairman noted the high level of trust and mutual respect that has developed between Kazakhstan and Montenegro.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. During this time, Astana and Podgorica have built a reliable political dialogue. Your personal meetings with President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev have contributed greatly to this process. As noted in today’s joint statement, our countries are interested in further strengthening mutual cooperation. As parliamentarians, we are ready to provide all necessary support for this at the legislative level, stated Koshanov.

Koshanov informed the President of Montenegro about the political reforms being carried out in the country and the adoption of a new Constitution through a nationwide referendum. As a result, the work of all branches of government is being comprehensively renewed, a legal foundation is being created for the transition to a unicameral Parliament, and a new socio-political institution the Khalyk Kenesi (People’s Council) is being established. All of this is the outcome of the large-scale reform agenda initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and broadly supported by the people of Kazakhstan.

Speaking about interparliamentary relations, the Majilis speaker noted that he maintains regular contact with the speaker of the parliament of Montenegro. He spoke about the friendship group operating in the Majilis with the Skupština of Montenegro and expressed support for further expanding the exchange of legislative experience, as well as strengthening contacts between parliamentarians both bilaterally and through international parliamentary platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, PACE, and others.

In his response, Jakov Milatović expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and reaffirmed Podgorica’s interest in deepening bilateral cooperation. He stressed that Montenegro highly values the reforms being implemented in Kazakhstan and is ready to fully support interparliamentary dialogue, as well as joint economic, cultural, and humanitarian projects.

During the meeting, the sides also discussed prospects for implementing joint projects in tourism, digitalization, transport, logistics, healthcare, and the development of trade and investment ties.
