North Aral Sea receives 1.2 bcm of water
Around 1.2 billion cubic meters of water have been delivered to the North Aral Sea via the Syrdarya River since October 1, 2025, bringing its total water volume to 23.4 billion cubic meters, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
According to the ministry, measures taken in recent years have helped maintain a stable flow of water into the North Aral Sea. During the current growing season, the inflow stands at 14 cubic meters per second and is expected to gradually increase to 100-150 cubic meters per second by the end of the season. The sea currently holds 23.4 billion cubic meters of water.
Efforts to preserve the North Aral Sea also include automating water accounting in the Syrdarya River basin and reconstructing hydraulic structures.
First Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurlan Aldamzharov said Kazakhstan is strengthening cooperation with neighboring countries on transboundary water management. As part of these efforts, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed an agreement last year on the joint management and sustainable use of transboundary water bodies following 10 years of negotiations.
Earlier, Qazinform reported Kazakhstan allocates 3 billion tenge for the Lake Alakol shore protection project.
