Chiikawa takes charge as Tokyo station’s one-day master
The titular character of the hit Japanese manga Chiikawa was named Tokyo Station’s one-day station master on Wednesday as part of a promotion for an upcoming film set for release on July 24, Kyodo reported.
A Chiikawa mascot gave the departure signal for a Tokaido Shinkansen train bound for Shin-Osaka.
With the Chiikawa-themed film set to open on July 24, JR Tokai has launched a promotional campaign running from August through October to encourage travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line linking Tokyo and Osaka.
The beloved animal-like character and its friends have gained popularity across Asia, including South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong. The manga has also been adapted into an anime series.
Previously, it was reported that the Hello Kitty-themed Shinkansen bullet train, operated by West Japan Railway Co., made its farewell run in May, marking the end of eight years in service.
