The officer, 62, was assigned to the General Staff of the Tenerife Command and suffered the heart attack while on standby in the unit’s operations control room.

Emergency services attempted resuscitation for 40 minutes but were unable to save his life, according to the police union Jucil.

WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also commented on the incident, noting that the officer had participated in the operation coordinated between Spanish authorities and the WHO to safely evacuate passengers from the MV Hondius and transfer them for repatriation.

“Emergency services at the dock immediately began resuscitation maneuvers, but, regrettably, they were unable to save his life,” Tedros wrote on X.

Earlier, Qazinform reported that one of 17 American citizens evacuated from a cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak has tested mildly positive for the Andean strain. A French woman evacuated from the ship also tested positive - the first case identified in France.
