Shymkent's GRP grows 11% to KZT 5.7 trillion — mayor reports
Akim (Mayor) of Shymkent Gabit Syzdykbekov briefed President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the city's socio-economic development, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing the Akorda press service.
Gabit Syzdykbekov reported that last year, the city's gross regional product (GRP) reached 5.7 trillion tenge, increasing 11 percent year-on-year. Among all regions, Shymkent ranks second in terms of GRP growth. In 2025, KZT 859.5 billion in investments were attracted to the city's economy, 72 percent of which were private investments. Overall growth reached 7.5 percent.
Over the past three years, 50 industrial projects worth a total of 170 billion tenge have been carried out, creating more than 3,500 new jobs. Active businesses numbered 133,000, producing KZT 4.7 trillion worth of goods and services. Their share in the city's GRP rose from 41 to 56 percent.
The mayor of Shymkent reported that positive socio-economic dynamics continued in the first four months of 2026. The short-term economic indicator climbed by 10.4 percent, with growth recorded in industry, construction, trade, and transport.
The Head of State was briefed on how his previous instructions are being implemented. A new modern perinatal center with 200 beds is currently under construction. A rehabilitation center with 150 beds is also scheduled to open this year. Construction continues on a new state-of-the-art 35,000-seat stadium, as well as a specialized complex for Paralympic and Deaflympic sports and boccia.
It was also noted that the city prioritizes integrating artificial intelligence in education, healthcare, and the public utilities sector.
Concluding the meeting, the President issued several directives to further develop Shymkent and improve residents' quality of life.
Earlier, President Tokayev received Dinara Zakiyeva, Kazakh Commissioner for Children’s Rights, who presented updates on systemic measures to strengthen child protection.
