Qatar earns historic first World Cup point
Brazil and Qatar both opened with draws on June 13 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Brazil and Morocco finished 1-1 in Group C and Qatar held Switzerland to a 1-1 draw in Group B, Qazinform News Agency correspondent reports.
The meeting between Brazil and Morocco was among the most anticipated of the opening round, pairing the five-time champion with a side that reached the semifinals in 2022. Morocco started strongly and took the lead through Ismael Saibari in the 21st minute, finishing a pass from Brahim Diaz. Vinicius Junior equalized for Brazil in the 32nd minute after combining with Bruno Guimaraes. The second half was tighter, with Brazil tightening its midfield and limiting Morocco's openings. Both teams opened their campaigns with a point. Brazil next faces Haiti on June 19, with Morocco meeting Scotland the same day.
In Group B, Qatar earned the first point in its World Cup history, drawing 1-1 with Switzerland. Switzerland controlled most of the match and went ahead through a Breel Embolo penalty in the 17th minute, but could not add a second despite a clear advantage in possession and shots. Qatar equalized in stoppage time to claim the draw. The result left Switzerland without the win its performance had appeared to merit. Switzerland faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in its next match on June 18, while Qatar meets Canada the same day.
Earlier, Qazinform reported that Scotland and Australia opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaigns with victories, as Scotland edged Haiti 1-0 in Group C and Australia defeated Türkiye 2-0 in Group D.
