Scotland's victory over Haiti was its first at a World Cup since 1990 and came in the team's first finals appearance in 28 years. John McGinn scored the only goal in the 28th minute, and Scotland defended the lead through to the final whistle. Haiti, playing at its first World Cup since 1974, had spells of possession and created chances but could not find an equalizer. The result moved Scotland to the top of Group C after Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1, while Haiti remained without a point. Scotland next faces Morocco on June 19, with Haiti meeting Brazil the same day.

In Vancouver, Australia produced one of the day's more unexpected results, beating Türkiye 2-0 despite seeing far less of the ball. Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute, becoming Australia's youngest goalscorer in World Cup history. Connor Metcalfe added a second in the 75th minute to settle the result. It was Australia's first win in an opening World Cup match since 2006. The result puts Australia second in Group D on three points, behind the United States on goal difference after the U.S. beat Paraguay 4-1 on June 12. Türkiye and Paraguay remain without a point. Australia faces the United States next on June 19, while Türkiye meets Paraguay the same day.

Earlier, Qazinform reported that Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw in their Group C match of the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
