OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its AI chatbot designed to help users aged 13 to 17 learn, think critically and use AI safely, with stronger built-in protections and additional parental controls, Qazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Users who are estimated to be under 18, or who state that they are between 13 and 17, will automatically be placed into the teen experience.

A key focus is education. ChatGPT for Teens includes Study Mode, which uses guiding questions and step-by-step support instead of simply providing answers. New responsible homework reminders can identify attempts to shortcut assignments and redirect users to Study Mode. Teens can also use quizzes and learning visualizations to practice and better understand difficult concepts.

The new Study Hours feature allows teens or their parents to set times when Study Mode is enabled by default, helping establish regular study habits.

OpenAI is also partnering with CodeAI to give students and educators tools and resources for understanding how AI works, questioning its output and using it creatively.

The teen experience includes age-appropriate safeguards covering areas such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content. Parents with linked teen accounts can set Quiet Hours, manage selected settings and receive notifications in limited high-risk situations. OpenAI is adding notifications related to eating disorders while limiting the information shared.

The company said ChatGPT for Teens is also designed to promote healthy use and real-world relationships. The experience includes break reminders, clear cues that users are interacting with AI, and warnings against sharing private or sensitive images.

OpenAI's updated under-18 model guidelines also prohibit romantic or sexualized roleplay and instruct ChatGPT not to use romantic language, encourage emotional dependence, or suggest that it has feelings or consciousness.

Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that OpenAI had been accused of shutting out US workers.
