The North Kazakhstan region has become the first in the country to begin selecting breeding livestock abroad, with plans to import more than 2,000 head of cattle and over 4,000 head of small livestock from Australia this fall, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing Kazakhstan's Ministry of Agriculture.

The initiative is part of Kazakhstan's 2026-2030 Comprehensive Livestock Development Plan, aimed at expanding production, improving herd genetics, and increasing productivity across the sector.

As part of the initiative, a regional delegation, including First Deputy Akim Marat Tasmaganbetov, head of the Union of Livestock Breeders Dauren Salykov, and local agricultural producers, visited livestock farms in Australia to inspect and select breeding animals.

The selection focused on breed characteristics, age, weight, health, productivity, and reproductive potential. The delegation also discussed prices, veterinary and quarantine requirements, logistics, and delivery schedules to assess both the quality of the livestock and the economic viability of the imports.

More than 2,000 head of cattle and over 4,000 head of small livestock are expected to arrive in the North Kazakhstan region in September-October 2026. A delegation from the Kostanay region is also expected to visit Ireland in September for a similar livestock selection mission.

According to the ministry, the 2026-2030 plan is designed to expand livestock production, attract investment, and support new projects, with concessional financing available to help farmers purchase breeding livestock, expand their operations, and modernize production facilities.

Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that scientists at the Kazakh Research Institute of Processing and Food Industry had developed an integrated technology for producing marbled lamb from the Kazakh fine-wool sheep breed.
