Alamgir secured 255 votes in the presidential election, defeating Oli Ahmad, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and candidate of an alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, who received 88 votes.

Voting took place in the chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh’s parliament, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time. Of the 349 members of parliament eligible to vote, 343 cast valid ballots.

Bangladesh’s president is elected by members of parliament. The ruling BNP currently holds an absolute majority in parliament.

The election was held to fill the vacancy left by former President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu, who resigned on July 24. Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the presidency becoming vacant.

Alamgir is scheduled to take the oath of office on Friday evening.

Earlier, Qazinform reported Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov had officially announced he would seek another term in the country’s 2027 presidential election.
