Kazakh weightlifter sets junior world record
The 2026 World Junior Weightlifting Championships wrapped up in Ismailia, Egypt, where Kazakhstan’s national team won five medals, Qazinform News Agency reports.
All of Kazakhstan’s medals came in the men’s 88 kg weight category. In the snatch event, Alikhan Askerbay claimed silver after lifting 161 kg.
In the clean and jerk, Yerassyl Saulebekov took gold with a lift of 199 kg, while Askerbay earned bronze with 194 kg.
In the combined total standings, both athletes finished among the top three. Saulebekov won silver with a total of 356 kg, while Askerbay took bronze with 355 kg.
Another Kazakh athlete, Beibarys Yerseit, competing in the 65 kg category, set a youth world record in the snatch by lifting 131 kg.
Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that Kazakhstan’s athletes have won two silver and two bronze medals in classical chess at the 20th ICCD World Deaf Team Chess Championship 2026 in Roquetas de Mar, Spain.
