Indonesia sees tourism surge as foreign arrivals top one million in March
Indonesia’s tourism industry recorded robust growth in March 2026, with international arrivals exceeding one million and domestic travel reaching new highs, signaling a strong and sustained recovery in the sector, TV BRICS reports.
Official statistics show that the country welcomed approximately 1.09 million foreign visitors during the month. This represents a 10.5 percent increase compared to March 2025, reinforcing Indonesia’s status as one of the region’s fastest-rebounding tourism markets.
During the first quarter of 2026, total international arrivals reached 3.44 million, marking an 8.62 percent rise year-on-year and the highest level recorded for this period since 2020.
Travel from neighboring countries continued to play a major role in driving inbound tourism, accounting for a significant portion of visitors. At the same time, domestic tourism surged, with Indonesians making over 319 million trips in March alone - a 13.14 percent increase fueled by greater mobility across the country.
This spike in travel demand has boosted all modes of transportation. Rail services handled the highest number of passengers, while ferry transport saw the fastest growth, reflecting stronger inter-island connections. Air and sea travel also experienced notable increases, both domestically and internationally.
Overall, the latest figures highlight tourism’s expanding role in Indonesia’s economy, supported by rising consumer demand, improved transport links, and seasonal travel trends.
