The match, played at Toronto Stadium, appeared destined for a goalless draw until Caleb Yirenkyi struck in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Panama created better chances for much of the game, particularly in the first half, but Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made several crucial saves.

The decisive moment came in the 95th minute, when Thomas Asante delivered a cross into the penalty area for Yirenkyi, who fired the ball into the net to secure victory and three points for Ghana.

The goal was Yirenkyi's first for Ghana's national team and earned the country a winning start to the World Cup campaign.

Earlier, it was reported that England kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an entertaining 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening Group L match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
