EPCH inks pact with Kazakhstan's industry body for handicrafts

NEW DELHI. September 21. KAZINFORM  The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) on Thursday said it has signed an agreement with Kazakhstan-based Almaty Chamber of Commerce and Industry aimed at increasing Indian handicrafts exports in this significant market of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.

"This Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) is the reflection of the resolve and the commitment of EPCH towards increasing cooperation in trade of gifts and handicrafts between India and Kazakhstan," Kumar said.

The pact, was signed in  Almaty which is considered as a major business hub in Kazakhstan, would also focus on working closely with each other on technology and design to help the artisans. To reduce dependence on western markets like the US and Europe, Indian exporters are exploring the possibility of increasing their exports to new markets like the CIS region and Africa, The Economic Times reports.

During April-August 2012, India's handicrafts exports jumped about 10 per cent to $1.2 billion compared to the same period last fiscal.
