CNN founder Ted Turner dies at 87: Media pioneer who transformed global news
The founder of CNN, Ted Turner, has passed away at the age of 87, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing Al Jazeera.
The American media magnate, known for reshaping the global television news landscape, died on Wednesday, according to a statement released by Turner Enterprises. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Turner had previously revealed in 2018 that he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder.
He built his fortune by expanding his father’s billboard advertising business before moving into television in the 1970s. His acquisition of a small TV station eventually laid the foundation for a vast media empire, including the launch of CNN - the world’s first 24-hour news channel.
Mark Thompson, CEO of CNN Worldwide, described Turner as a visionary leader whose influence remains deeply embedded in the network’s identity.
“He was fearless, intuitive, and always ready to trust his instincts. Ted Turner is the figure upon whose legacy CNN continues to stand,” Thompson said, noting that his impact extended far beyond the company.
Over time, Turner became one of the most influential figures in the U.S. media and entertainment industry. His portfolio grew to include networks focused on news, sports, classic films, and syndicated programming. He also acquired the MGM/UA film studio before orchestrating a landmark merger between Turner Broadcasting System and Time Warner in 1996.
Despite initially holding a leading shareholder position and overseeing cable operations, Turner later struggled within a more corporate environment and ultimately lost control of his media assets.
Beyond business, Turner was widely known for his diverse pursuits. He owned professional sports teams, led a competitive sailing crew, and was married to actress Jane Fonda. He was also actively involved in philanthropy and environmental initiatives.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp noted that Turner earned respect even from critics due to his bold personality and wide-ranging contributions.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in November 1938, Robert Edward “Ted” Turner III was educated at a military boarding school in Tennessee and later attended Brown University, though he did not complete his degree.
He assumed control of the family business following the death of his father, who took his own life amid financial difficulties.
