Cape Verde holds Spain and Yamal to goalless draw at World Cup
Spain was held to a shock 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Qazinform News Agency reports.
Despite dropping points, Spain dominated possession for most of the game and created several scoring chances. However, Luis de la Fuente’s side failed to break through a disciplined Cape Verdean defense.
The result was a major achievement for Cape Verde, which withstood sustained pressure from one of the tournament favorites to earn a valuable point in its World Cup debut campaign.
Spain star Lamine Yamal came off the bench in the 71st minute but failed to make a significant impact in securing a winning goal for his team.
Spain will face Saudi Arabia in their next Group H match on June 21, while Cape Verde will play Uruguay later the same day.
Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that Africa would reach a new milestone at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a record 10 national teams participating in the tournament.
