Tajikistan to pardon 18,000 convicts ahead of 35th anniversary of State Independence
On June 16, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the State Independence of the Republic of Tajikistan, President Emomali Rahmon signed the law “On Amnesty," Qazinform News Agency learned from Khovar.
The amnesty law will apply to 18,038 convicted individuals. Specifically, 11,305 people will be released from prisons, correctional institutions, or from serving other non-custodial sentences. The remaining prison terms of 6,733 individuals will be reduced.
The law provides for greater privileges for women and minors. Out of 507 women currently serving sentences, 248 will be released from serving the remainder of their sentences, while the remaining terms of 259 women will be reduced. Of the 134 juveniles serving sentences, 99 will be released from serving the remainder of their sentences, while the remaining terms of 35 will be reduced.
The Law "On Amnesty" also applies to persons whose cases are under judicial proceedings, investigation, and verification.
The law obliges the relevant authorities to ensure its implementation within two months and submit a report to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Earlier, Qazinform reported that more than 15,000 convicts in Kazakhstan may be granted amnesty in connection with the adoption of the new Constitution, including over 5,000 inmates currently serving sentences in correctional facilities.
