12,700 evacuated as torrential rains batter Liaoning in northeast China

Heavy to torrential rain fell across southeastern Liaoning from 8 a.m. Sunday to 11 a.m. Monday, with some areas experiencing intense downpours. Northern and western parts of the province saw light to moderate rain, with localized heavy to torrential rainfall.

Red alerts for torrential rain remain in effect in several parts of Liaoning. As of 6 a.m. Monday, nine cities had activated flood emergency responses, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

Authorities have placed 3,611 rescue and emergency response teams, totaling more than 127,000 personnel, on standby across eight cities, including Dalian, Anshan and Dandong. Dandong alone had evacuated 8,078 people by 6 a.m. Monday.

The Dandong meteorological observatory issued a red alert at 11:33 a.m. Monday after 160 to 240 mm of precipitation fell in the urban area over the previous 11 hours. Another 100 to 130 mm was expected over the following six to eight hours, with hourly rainfall potentially reaching 70 mm. Total precipitation could exceed 350 mm by the end of the event.

China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

Qazinform News Agency previously reported that two people were found dead and four others were still missing after rain-induced landslides in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
