XDS Astana's Christian Scaroni takes second place at Trofeo Laigueglia
XDS Astana Team rider Christian Scaroni claimed second place at Trofeo Laigueglia, Kazinform News Agency cites the Team's press service.
The 197-kilometer race at the Ligurian coast marks the traditional opening of the Italian cycling season. Today Christian Scaroni had an impressive day of racing responding to the attacks of Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and launching his own attempts to go solo. The race was decided in the final meters, where Scaroni finished second in a four-man sprint.
“I knew I needed to stay close to Ayuso and respond to his attacks. I also tried to break away from him because I knew it would be very difficult to beat him in a sprint. In the final two laps, we were basically exchanging attacks and trying to get away. But in the end, it all came down to a small group sprint. I’m feeling strong right now, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming Strade Bianche. It will definitely be an incredibly tough race, but we’ll do our best to show our maximum”, said Christian Scaroni.
“Initially, Scaroni was our leader, while Bettiol had a free role. When Scaroni was left one-on-one with Ayuso in the final kilometers, I was hoping Bettiol could catch up — that would have changed the dynamics of the finish. Today, we took second place, but I’m satisfied with the team: the guys put in a strong performance. It’s also great to see Ulissi and Velasco back after their illnesses. I’m confident that by Strade Bianche and the upcoming races, we’ll be in even better shape”, added Alexander Shefer, Lead Sports Director of XDS Astana Team.
Alberto Bettiol took seventh place today.
To note, XDS Astana Team rider Henok Mulubrhan, racing as part of the Eritrean National Team, claimed victory on the first stage of the Tour du Rwanda.
