Transport greenhouse gas emissions debated in Almaty
ALMATY. June 5. KAZINFORM International expert of UNDP-GEF "City of Almaty Sustainable Transport" project Dmitriy Golubovskiy held a seminar on assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transport on May 29.
Representatives of the city akimat, Kazhydromet, Kazakh Research Institute of Ecology and Climate, the Tynyshpayev Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communications, and AlmatyElectroTrans municipal institute took part in the seminar. Dmitriy Golubovskiy presented the goals of monitoring component of the project and told about the GEF methodology, according to which the basic line of GHG emissions from transport was calculated in 2011. The basic line was estimated at the level of 2.18 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
The participants discussed the key points of methodology of GHG emissions assessment and basic indicators for evaluation of the project efficiency taking into consideration not only global ecological benefits but also needs of Almaty city, the UNDP press release reads.
Kazhydromet leading engineer Dosym Chabakov presented the current methodology of air pollution monitoring. The seminar participants discussed the main problems of current monitoring such as the lack of air condition analytical research and offered some ways to improve the monitoring. GHG emissions data would be used by international experts during the development of integrated Transport Master Plan for Almaty City.
