Nazarbayev's ATOM project supported in Canada

ASTANA. June 5. KAZINFORM - In Ottawa, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Canada K.Zhigalov took part in a series of events dedicated to strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, the press service of the diplomatic mission.

Kazakh Embassy in Ottawa organized a round table discussion on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, with participation of members of the Canadian Parliament, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada, the ambassadors of foreign states accredited in Ottawa, and a group of eminent experts of the Union of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation of weapons and Disarmament (PNND).

At the invitation of the Canadian section of the co-chairs of PNND - members of the House of Commons of Canada E.Laverde and S.Armstrong - ambassador K.Zhigalov spoke at the presentation of PNND leadership and the Interparliamentary Union for parliamentarians in the field of disarmament. The event was also attended by the major Canadian NGOs working on disarmament and reduction of the nuclear threat. Among the participants were the vice-chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons of Canada P.Dyuvar and founder of PNND D.Rosh, who in August 2012 took part in the international conference titled "From nuclear test ban for a world free of nuclear weapons" in Astana.

In continuation of the dialogue with representatives of Canadian civil society, Ambassador K.Zhigalov spoke at a conference on the role of public pressure to ensure a world without nuclear weapons.

Participants of the event praised the efforts of our country and contribution of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to promoting nuclear safety - closure of the Semipalatinsk test site and the voluntary renunciation of nuclear arsenal. Canadian experts were in favor of an international project named ATOM proposed by the President of Kazakhstan and aimed at final and irreversible cessation of the nuclear weapons use.
