National Geographic Society to be set up in Kazakhstan

ALMATY. July 24. KAZINFORM Kazakhstan will establish the National Geographic Society (KNGS). This has been announced by the manager of the project Damir Mahambetkaliev.

According to him, the founding congress of Kazakhstan National Geographic Society will be held in Astana in early October this year. It will be attended by leading representatives of the academic environment in geography and related disciplines, and experts from relevant NGOs.

In the framework of the Congress there will be established a new society, its governing body will be elected, and it will host a conference that will be conducted within the framework of the debate, "round tables", and thematic sections on topical issues in the field of geography and related sciences. The main theme of the conference is "Modern geography of Kazakhstan: state, trends and prospects. Proactive national geography as a path to sustainable development in Kazakhstan. The role of the Kazakh Geographic Society in the whole of country-level issues."

The Society will bring together all organizations interested in progress of geography and environmental science, it will offer the right solutions to the country-wide problems involving academia, non-governmental and governmental organizations", said D.Mahambetkaliev.

The conference will bring together scientists and experts from the Nazarbayev University, Nazarbayev University Research & Innovation System, The Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, "The Republican scientific-production and information center" LLP, Kazecology, the Kazakh Geographic Society, the Gumilyov Eurasian National University, the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, the Institute of Geography, the Geographical Society of Kazakhstan and others.

They will discuss current global country issues to be addressed by KNGS. In particular, the geographical aspects of sustainable development and transition to a "green" economy, the role of Kazakhstan in modern geopolitics and geospatial development, water security of the country, the problems of desertification, transboundary water problems, development of geography as a science, issues of eco-environment and biodiversity; global climate change and polar research, and progress of eco-tourism in Kazakhstan.
