Midland shooting leaves one dead and 10 injured in Texas

One person was killed and 10 others were injured in an active shooter incident in Midland, Texas, Qazinform News Agency reports.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Midland Police Department, and other local, state, and federal agencies responded around 8:00 a.m. CST to reports of an active shooter in the 4600 block of West Wall Street in Midland, Texas.

Officials said the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, who lived in Odessa, opened fire on officers and bystanders upon their arrival and then barricaded himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic.

Law enforcement established a perimeter and entered a standoff that lasted several hours. The suspect was later found dead inside the building at around 12:30 p.m. CST.

Authorities confirmed that one victim was killed and 10 others were injured. No law enforcement officers were reported injured in the incident.

Officials said Villarreal had previously been wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after allegedly firing at a Midland Police officer during a vehicle pursuit on June 10, 2026.

The case has been handed over to the Texas Rangers, who are leading the investigation at the request of local authorities. Police said the investigation remains active.

Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that at least 12 people were killed and nine others were injured in a mass shooting at an informal settlement in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.
