Kazakhstan’s sown area reaches 23.8 mln hectares

This year’s total sown area in Kazakhstan will reach 23.8 million hectares, that is 180,000 hectares more compared to last year, Vice Minister of Agriculture Azat Sultanov announced at a Government meeting today, Qazinform News Agency reports.

According to Azat Sultanov, the Ministry has kept spring fieldwork under close supervision since the beginning of the year, with all issues addressed through the Operational Headquarters involving all concerned parties.

The Ministry, together with regional akimats (administrations0, has formed the structure of sown areas. Priority is given to highly profitable crops, with expanded planting areas. Oilseeds will surpass 4 million hectares, 74,000 ha up; fodder crops will make 3.3 million hectares, 237,000 ha up.

To supply raw materials for processing projects, corn planting has been expanded to 265,000 hectares, while potato planting in organized farms will increase by 10,000 hectares.

Diversification efforts are underway in line with the President’s instructions.

Wheat areas were reduced by 125,000 hectares to 12.1 million ha, rice fields were optimized by 20,200 ha to ease water resource pressure, while cotton under drip irrigation was expanded by 29,800 ha.

Azat Sultanov emphasized that the approved sowing structure will ensure the necessary harvest volume while meeting external demand trends.
