Historic first: Kazakhstani professional receives NASPA International Award
Aray Saniyazova, a staff member at Nazarbayev University, has become the first person from Kazakhstan to receive the prestigious NASPA Global Division Award of Distinction, Qazinform News Agency reports.
This award honors exceptional contributions to global student affairs and recognizes the work of the NASPA Global Division outside the U.S. and Canada.
NASPA is an international organization focused on advancing student affairs through research, professional development, and global collaboration. Its network includes universities and educational institutions across all 50 U.S. states and more than 20 countries worldwide.
The award ceremony took place at the annual NASPA conference in Kansas City, which gathered over 2,500 participants from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. This year marked the introduction of the NASPA Global Division Award of Distinction, which recognizes individuals for exceptional programs, innovative services, and effective administration that support global student affairs.
Aray Saniyazova was honored for her contributions to supporting international students at Nazarbayev University, where she has worked since 2011. During her tenure, she has enhanced the student experience by fostering inclusive environments and developing effective strategies to support international students’ achievements.
In addition, she has been appointed to the NASPA Global Division Board, joining 15 professionals from leading universities worldwide.
Saniyazova earned her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and completed her PhD at Nazarbayev University. She also conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, and at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.
In 2025, her initiative to support international students earned Nazarbayev University the NASPA MENASA Region Gold Award for the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
Earlier, Qazinform News Agency reported that Assel Sharimova became the first Kazakhstani to win the 2026 Michael Fullan Emerging Scholar Award.
