Kazakh President: Almaty bids to host 2022 Winter Olympic Games

ASTANA. October 10. KAZINFORM Today, Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev has received mayor of Almaty city Akhmetzhan Yessimov, the president's press service reports.

At the meeting, the chief of Almaty city administration reported on the socioeconomic development of the megapolis over the last nine months.

The President of Kazakhstan noted it was necessary to continue the improvement of municipal infrastructure.

"The improvement of ecological situation, reconstruction of motorways, construction of transport junctions and loop roads contribute to the improvement of life of the residents and economy of the city in general. Almaty is the 'locomotive' among other regions of the country," Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

Utmost attention was paid to the development of tourism in Almaty that is to become one of the key sectors of its economy.

"In line with my instructions, the city administration is bending every effort to develop tourism, especially skiing, to make maximum use of the potential of the Almaty mountains. New jobs are expected to be created in this sphere as well, which is a huge plus," the Kazakh President stressed.

"Almaty has entered the race to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Such high-profile tournaments will add to the development of sports in the city and will help the world get to know Almaty better," President Nazarbayev noted.

Following the meeting, Almaty mayor Yessimov received a number of specific instructions on further development of Almaty infrastructure and ways to improve the wellbeing of residents.
