Kazakh Medical University's Diabetes Center helps women with diabetes give birth to healthy kids
ALMATY. December 23. KAZINFORM - The S.Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University's Diabetes Center can help women with type1 and 2 diabetes give birth to healthy kids, according to information announced at an Almaty-hosted press conference of the Center's experts, Kazakhstani leading endocrinologists and obstetricians and five women with diabetes who delivered healthy children.
Women with diabetes are known to face problems with getting pregnant and producing a healthy kid. In the soviet times, they were recommended to terminate pregnancy because of fear to produce a child with diabetes or congenital defects. However, global studies show that the risk of baby's developing diabetes is 7%, if mother has type 1 diabetes and 17%, if both parents have this type diabetes, which is a very rare case. These are encouraging figures and Kazakhstan decided to revisit the soviet approach to rid of the medical holdover.
KazNMU Diabetes Center and the healthcare ministry's Scientific Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology conducted a pilot study on the use of insulin pumps by pregnant women with type 1 diabetes. As a result, five women earlier considered unable to become mothers, gave birth to healthy children. Notably, these women were treated as healthy pregnant women.
The experts involved in the project have developed technologies that can be used by every hospital in the country. This will enable women with diabetes to exercise their constitutional right for motherhood and help improve the demographic situation in the country.
