Kapshagai reservoir in Almaty region is 98% full, Ministry

The Kapshagai reservoir in Almaty region has reached 98% capacity, accumulating 18.04 billion cubic meters of water, Qazinform News Agency cites the Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry.

It will fully provide irrigation water for agricultural lands in the Akdalinsky and Shengeldinsky rural districts.

The reservoir regulates inflows from the transboundary River Ili, which flows into Lake Balkhash. During the non‑vegetation period, about 4 billion cubic meters of water were directed from the reservoir into Balkhash.

Seilbek Nurymbetov, chairman of regulation, protection, and use of water resources committee, emphasized ongoing cooperation with Chinese counterparts on transboundary rivers, including the River Ili. Thanks to coordinated actions between the two countries, farmers in Almaty region have been reliably supplied with irrigation water for the third year in a row.

It should be noted, Kazakhstan to build three new water reservoirs by 2029.
