Gunfire erupts at Philippines Senate amid ICC arrest standoff
Gunshots erupted inside the Philippines Senate on Wednesday evening as Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, took refuge in the legislative building while resisting arrest over alleged crimes against humanity, reports a Qazinform News Agency correspondent.
The dramatic standoff unfolded after the International Criminal Court confirmed it had issued an arrest warrant for Dela Rosa over his alleged role in the Philippines’ controversial anti-drug campaign between 2016 and 2018.
Panic spread through the Senate building after loud gunshots were heard near the second floor, where journalists had gathered. Authorities later confirmed that unidentified armed men attempted to enter the building but were stopped by security personnel.
Philippines Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said an officer from the Senate security team fired a warning shot, after which the armed group retreated while firing into the air. One suspect has been arrested, while no casualties were reported.
In a late-night address, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. denied government involvement in the incident.
“We do not know who attempted to enter and caused the shooting. We will find out,” Marcos said, calling for calm.
Dela Rosa, who headed the national police during Duterte’s deadly anti-drug campaign, has denied accusations linked to extrajudicial killings. Earlier Wednesday, he appealed to supporters outside the Senate.
“Help me,” he said in a video message, insisting the ICC has no jurisdiction over him.
The ICC alleges that thousands were killed during Duterte’s anti-drug crackdown, known as “Oplan Tokhang.” Official police data says more than 6,000 people died, though rights groups believe the real figure is significantly higher.
Earlier in February, Qazinform News Agency reported that prosecutors at the ICC had begun presenting evidence against former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte over alleged crimes against humanity linked to his anti-drug campaign.
