Founder of Kazakhstan's pediatric surgery Kamal Ormantayev passed away

Prominent Kazakh pediatrician, professor, Doctor of Medicine, academician of the National Academy of Sciences Kamal Ormantayev has passed away at the age of 88, Kazinform News Agency learned from the press service of the Kazakh National University of Medicine named after Sanzhar Asfendiyarov.

Kamal Ormantayev was born on September 11, 1936, in the family of a peasant in Oktyabr kolkhoz of Kyzylorda region’s Karmakchi district. In 1959, he graduated from the Faculty of Pediatrics of the Kazakh State Medical Institute. In 1961, he completed clinical residency program at the Pediatric Surgery Faculty, and in 1965 he finished his postgraduate studies at the Department of Hospital Surgery of the Almaty Medical Institute. Later, he obtained his doctoral degree from the Research Institute of Pediatrics of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow.

In different years he worked as an assistant at the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Alma-Ata Medical Institute, and  as a pediatrician at a district hospital. He also led the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Alma-Ata Medical Institute / KazNMU named after S. D. Asfendiyarov. He was the dean of the Faculty of Pediatrics of this institute, and the director of the Scientific Center for Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Kamal Ormantayev has saved thousands of Kazakhstani children. He has performed more than 20 thousand complex surgeries on the chest organs, lungs, esophagus, abdominal cavity, skull and kidneys, and he was the first in Kazakhstan to perform thoracoplasty for congenital funnel chest in children.

Ormantayev has trained more than 200 doctors and candidates of science. He is the author of more than 320 scientific works, including manuals and monographs, and 22 inventions. He holds numerous orders and awards, including the title of the best doctor of the year (2002, 2004), II degree Dostyq, III degree Barys and Parasat orders.

Earlier, Kazinform reported about death of outstanding Kazakh writer, laureate of the State Prize Mukhtar Magauin. President Tokayev extended his condolences to the writer's family.
