Extradition agreement with Bulgaria ratified by Kazakh Majilis
ASTANA. KAZINFORM - The Majilis, the lower chamber of the Kazakh Parliament, has endorsed the draft law "On ratification of the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Bulgaria on extradition" at its plenary session today.
According to First Deputy Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan Johan Merkel, who introduced the draft law, with the agreement in effect, Kazakhstan and Bulgaria can extradite convicts for further serving of their terms in their homeland. "There is a number of conditions that have to be met when transferring a convict. For instance, the remaining prison term may not be shorter than six months at the time when the extradition is requested. The convict cannot be extradited of he/she obtained citizenship of the country where he/she has been charged or granted asylum there," he added.
In his words, the agreement regulates the relations between the competent authorities of Kazakhstan and Bulgaria on extradition of persons wanted for criminal prosecution.
