«Bike Away the Atomic Bomb» ride finished in New York

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - On the eve of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Review Conference, the ATOM project in cooperation with the Norwegian NGO called «Bike for Peace» and the International organization of «Mayors for Peace» organized a bike tour from Washington, D.C. to New York under the motto «Bike Away the Atomic Bomb». This bike ride finished on the square in front of the UN Head-quarter in New York on April 24, Kazinform refers to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

Permanent Representation of Kazakhstan to the UN has marked "Bike for Peace" successful finish by hosting of an art exhibition (followed by a reception) of the well-known Kazakh armless painter, Honorary Ambassador of the Atom Project, Nuclear Tests survivor Karipbek Kuyukov.

That special event was attended by the number of UN, foreign delegations representatives, US experts. Kazakhstan Foreign Deputy Minister Yerzhan Ashykbayev and Ambassador Kairat Abdrakhmanov made a welcome address to distinguished delegates and participants.

The purpose of the bike ride is to attract international attention to the tragic consequences of nuclear testing and the need to achieve greater progress in the implementation of international agreements on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

On August 29, 2012, at the International Day against Nuclear Tests, Kazakhstan has launched a new initiative entitled the ATOM Project (Abolish Testing. Our Mission), which is aimed at uniting the efforts of the international community with a view to the final prohibition of nuclear weapons tests.

At the moment, about 160,000 people worldwide have signed an online petition of the ATOM Project to world leaders to renounce forever from the nuclear tests.
