Banksy is an anonymous British street artist whose politically charged graffiti and provocative installations have made him one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary art.

Believed to have emerged from Bristol’s underground art scene in the 1990s, Banksy became known worldwide for works combining dark humor, social criticism and anti-establishment themes. Despite global fame and multimillion dollar sales of his artworks, the artist’s real identity has never been officially confirmed.

Ahead of the public opening, organizers hosted a closed preview for media representatives, offering journalists an early look at the exhibition and a chance to speak with the creators of the project.

According to the organizers, the exhibition traces Banksy’s artistic journey from his early street works to pieces created during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project explores the central question surrounding the artist for decades: whether Banksy should be seen as a vandal or one of the defining contemporary artists of the 21st century.

Among the key exhibits are two original road signs featuring Banksy’s graffiti, described by organizers as some of the rarest and most difficult pieces in the collection to acquire. The exhibition also features banknotes connected to Dismaland, Banksy’s dystopian art project and temporary theme park that attracted international attention in 2015.

Visitors will also experience large-scale multimedia projections designed to recreate the atmosphere of streets in London, Bristol and New York, cities closely associated with Banksy’s rise to global fame. Organizers said the exhibition was created to blur the line between the audience and the artwork, allowing visitors to become part of the artist’s universe rather than simply observe it.

The exhibition will run daily from May 15 through the end of August at Lumiere Hall in Astana.
