Almaty has potential to lead in transition to a «green economy”- A.Esimov
ALMATY. June 17. KAZINFORM — In Almaty, Ahmetzhan Esimov, Akim of the city, chaired a meeting on implementation of the concept of transition to "green economy" attended by Nurlan Kapparov, the Minister of Environmental Protection.
N. Kapparov considered the construction of the ski resort called "Kok Zhailau" as one of the important projects of this concept. "If properly designed and properly done, projects only improve ecosystems and benefit the economy. And, indeed, they are part of the "green economy." Maybe not everyone has clear understanding of what kind the project actually is. It is therefore necessary to clarify the point. I think it will be of high quality, meeting all international standards and it will benefit the ecosystem around Almaty city. There will be high-quality infrastructure, there will be walking and hiking, skiing and skating. In addition, it is a good opportunity for Almaty to develop new industry", said the head of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
The Akim noted that the largest Kazakh city's economy transition to "green economy" was very important. There have already taken measures in Almaty for improving environment. For instance, private sector gasification: the plan is to be completed this year, the thermal power stations operation transition to gas .. as well as the increase of number of public transport operating on gas and electricity. According to forecasts, by the end of this year 50% of Almaty public transport will be running on gas. "The adoption of this concept relevant and timely for our city. In this case we have every opportunity for Almaty to become the leader in transition to "green economy." Any innovation we consider from the ecological point of view and for us it is sufficient to work closely with the Ministry of Environmental Protection", said A.Esimov.
A. Esimov has also made a number of suggestions for further improving environmental situation in Almaty. Particular attention has been drawn to the need of taking measures at the legislative level of subsidy, partial or total exemption from taxes and customs duties of the sustainable transport being imported to Almaty as well as creation of competitive situation in the frame of constructing gas stations and additional equipment for the existing ones.
