4 children killed by landslide in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province

At least four children died when a landslide suddenly collapsed on them while they were digging soil in a remote mountainous area of northeastern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province on Friday, Xinhua reports, citing the provincial Department of Information and Culture.

The incident occurred in the Yamgan district, where the children, aged between 10 and 15, were trapped under falling earth and debris, the department said.

Rescue teams recovered the bodies from the site, but all four were pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident comes just days after another deadly landslide in neighboring Takhar province earlier this week, where one person was killed and four others injured.

Landslides and flash floods are common in Afghanistan's northeastern highlands, especially during the spring season, when melting snow and and heavy rainfall make mountain slopes unstable.

Earlier, it was reported that thousands of residents had fled their homes in the central Philippines after the Mayon Volcano erupted, sending lava flows down its slopes and ash across nearby communities.
