A 100-kilogram Asian black bear was captured and tranquilized in Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, on Tuesday after four days of sightings that led to school closures, Kyodo reported.

The bear, believed to have come from nearby mountains, was spotted near a residential area and safely removed by a hunting association.

Since Saturday, the city received 25 sighting reports, including one at Utsunomiya University that forced class cancellations.

All 94 municipal elementary and junior high schools remain closed through Wednesday as officials stay alert for possible additional bears.

Earlier, it was reported that dogs may be able to understand basic human messages from tone of voice alone, according to a new study that sheds light on how communication may have worked long before language developed.
