The 30-year-old joins the Qatar-backed Ligue 1 club on a three-year deal for a fee reported to be €20m (£15.7m). He is reunited with his former Milan team-mate Thiago Silva, who joined PSG on Saturday.

Ibrahimovic, who had a contract with Milan until June 2015, was Serie A's top scorer last season with 28 goals, and becomes PSG's latest big-money signing as they try to win the Ligue 1 title for the first time since 1994.

Earlier this month they signed Ezequiel Lavezzi from Napoli for a reported fee of €30m (£33.5m), and last summer secured the Argentina playmaker Javier Pastore from Palermo.

Ibrahimovic told reporters at the Parc des Princes: "I want to thank PSG because they made something impossible possible. It's a big step in my career. Another dream come true.

"This is a very interesting project. I had no doubts about it when Paris contacted my manager. Everything was clear in my head. I want to be part of this history. I'm sure we'll write this history. I'm here for winning."

The PSG president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, said: "He will add big value for PSG and for the French league. We'll be more competitive in the Champions League as well. A lot of media were asking us why we hadn't yet got a superstar. Now, we have one. It will be a very exciting season."

Asked about his reasons for leaving Milan, Ibrahimovic said: "I think nobody in Milan influenced me. This my decision. It's a new chapter in my life. Maybe this will be my final contract but who knows.

"It's true I don't know that much about Ligue 1 but Ligue 1 knows who I am. It's like a dream team. I'm going to play with some of the best players of the world. I believe in this project."

PSG will hope that Carlo Ancelotti's proven record of managing star-studded teams will rapidly bear fruit in Ligue 1, which looks set to be more unbalanced than in previous years, Kazinform has learnt from the Guardian.

Milan's chief executive, Adriano Galliani, meanwhile, has refused to discuss a possible replacement for Ibrahimovic. Recent reports in Italy have linked the club to Manchester City forwards Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez, as well as the Genoa striker Mattia Destro.

Galliani told the Gazzetta dello Sport: "Dzeko or Tevez? Let's wait and see." Asked how he intended to replace Ibrahimovic he added: "There's time to do so until 31 August."

But a move for Destro, who scored 12 goals while on loan at Siena last season, appears to be off, with a move to Serie A rivals Roma close. Galliani said: "We don't want to interfere with Roma."
