World Bank allocates Kazakhstan USD 21.7 mln grant for energy efficiency projects

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - The Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the World Bank (WB) have signed in Astana a grant agreement on the implementation of "Improving the energy efficiency of Kazakhstan" project worth USD 21.7 million.

The agreement was signed by Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Industry and New Technologies Asset Issekeshev and the World Bank's resident representative in Kazakhstan Sebnem Akkaya.

According to A.Isekeshev, during the project's implementation it is planned to modernize public social projects in all regions of the country including schools, kindergartens, hospitals and street lighting facilities. Grant funds will also be used to improve the institutional framework and to create sustainable energy financing mechanisms.

The grant will be applied as part of the Energy Efficiency Program. Analysis of the structure of energy consumption in Kazakhstan shows that the implementation of energy conservation policy should focus on energy, transport, housing and utilities sector.
