Works of World Photo Contest winners to be exhibited in Astana

ASTANA. December 9. KAZINFORM - An exhibition of winners of prestigious international competition in photojournalism the World Press Photo opens at shopping center "Keruen" in Astana, according to the Legal media center.

The exhibition is timed to the International Human Rights Day. In Central Asia, it is presented for the first time. This unique traveling exhibition includes about 150 works by the winners of the most prestigious international contest in photojournalism - the World Press Photo. The works reflect most important world events in 2012. Kazakhstanis will be able to visit the exhibition in Astana on 10-26 December and in Karaganda on 28 December - 11 January.

The World Press Photo is the most authoritative annual review of international photojournalism, which largely determines the standards of the profession. Each year, an independent jury consisting of professional photographers and photo editors of mass media assess works of applicants in nine categories. Works are presented by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all over the world. This year, the jury assessed more than 103 thousand photos of 5 000 photographers from 124 countries. In February 2013, Amsterdam saw the 56th final of the competition.

Each year, after the announcement of the competition's results, a exhibition of winners' works is shown in Amsterdam for two months and then starts its traveling throughout the world. On average, it is annually visited by about two million people. This year the exhibition will be presented at a record number of art venues - 105 galleries and museums in 45 countries.

The exhibition's arrival in Kazakhstan is sponsored by the diplomatic missions of the Netherlands, Delegation of the European Union, Norway, United States, Canada and the OSCE Centre .
