WHO Director-General Tedros condoles over deadly coal mine accident in Kazakhstan

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed condolences to the family members of those killed in the coal mine explosion in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region, Kazinform Agency reports.

Today is a sad day for the people of #Kazakhstan. My heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, he wrote on X (former Twitter).

An explosion occurred at 2:33am on October 28 in ArcelorMittal Temirtau's Kostenko coal mine in Karaganda region. 252 people were in the mine during the explosion, 205 of whom were taken to the surface.

The General Prosecutor's Office has launched a criminal investigation into the accident. According to ArcelorMittal Temirtau, there was a methane gas explosion in the lava in the mine, leading to the deaths of mine workers.

Earlier it was reported, as of 10:00am, the bodies of the 36 victims had been found as a result of the explosion in the Kostenko coal mine in Karaganda region.
