The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that five of the eight reported cases from the cruise ship MV Hondius are infections caused by hantavirus, Qazinform News Agency cites Xinhua.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated at a press conference that the remaining three are suspected cases.
He noted that more cases could emerge due to the incubation period of the Andes virus, a hantavirus strain found in South America. However, WHO currently assesses the public risk as low.
As written before, WHO warns of possible human-to-human transmission of hantavirus on cruise ship.
