Violent storm sweeps New York City

With winds up to 70 miles per hour, the fast moving storm brought in strong winds, heavy downpours and lightning, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning.

The storm toppled hundreds of trees in Brooklyn and Queens boroughs and trapped at least two people inside crushed cars. New York City Fire Department officials said one person was killed when a tree fell onto a car on the Grand Central Parkway.

Power giant Con Edison reported 27,000 households without power in the five boroughs including 21,000 in Queens and 6,000 in Staten Island. A total of 40,000 New Jersey households were without power. Kazinform cites cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com for full version.
